1 Mind Ministries cult member withdraws guilty plea in child's death

Javon Thompson A former member of a religious cult backed out of a plea deal Friday and will face trial on charges that he and others starved a toddler to death because the boy refused to say "Amen" after meals.

Marcus A. Cobbs, 22, had agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of accessory after the fact. But his attorney abruptly withdrew the plea after a dispute with prosecutors over the conditions of his release.


FBI: Former H. Rap Brown leads violent sect from prison

H. Rap Brown A Detroit imam shot and killed Wednesday in a gunfight with federal agents belonged to a Muslim separatist sect led by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, better known as 1960s militant H. Rap Brown, according to a federal complaint filed Wednesday.

The FBI says the dead man was an imam, or prayer leader, of a local faction of Ummah, a group that seeks to establish an Islamic state within the U.S


Trial for FLDS member interrupted

Raymond Jessop The child sexual assault trial of a polygamist sect member came to a screeching halt just before 3 p.m. today because a jurist's child may have swine flu.

Raymond Merrill Jessop is the first of 12 men from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to face a criminal trial in Texas. The assault charge stems from his alleged marriage to a girl who was 16 when she became pregnant.


Cult member to plead guilty to reduced charge in baby starvation case

Javon Thompson A member of the now defunct religious cult One Mind Ministries is planning to plead guilty to a reduced charge related to the starvation death of 1-year-old Javon Thompson.

The attorney for Marcus Cobbs says he will plead guilty Friday to accessory after the fact, according to the Associated Press.

The boy's mother and several other members of the cult were charged in connection with the boy's death, who was allegedly starved because he would not say 'Amen' after meals.

A trial for the other members has been postponed until January 27.


Bigamy charges against cult leader Yisrayl Hawkins dismissed in plea deal

Yisrayl Hawkins Bigamy charges against West Texas sect leader Yisrayl Hawkins were dismissed Thursday after the head of the House of Yahweh pleaded no contest to four cases involving child-labor violations, the Callahan County attorney announced.

The dismissal of the charges shocked Margo Hawkins, Yisrayl Hawkins' 36-year-old daughter, who left the House of Yahweh when she was 22. "It's a cult. They brainwash people," she said.
