Hate group cult free to abuse army families

Westboro Baptist Church A federal appeals court has thrown out a US$5 million ($7 million) verdict against fundamentalist Christian protesters who carried signs with inflammatory messages like "Thank God for dead soldiers" outside the Maryland funeral of a US Marine killed in Iraq.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church -- a cult-like hate group -- have deluded themselves into thinking they are Christians.

Idaho town denies religious sect building permit

Terrill Dalton The Tribal Land Use Commission denied a building permit for Joseph D. Ahlstrom, a member of the Church of the Firstborn and the General Assembly of Heaven, who planned to build a three-story dormitory for about 20 people on the Fort Hall Reservation.

The Church of the Firstborn moved to the area three months ago from Utah. They said they prayed about the move and the spirit of God directed them to Fort Hall.

Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins dies

Susan Atkins The Associated Press reports that Susan Atkins, a follower of cult leader Charles Manson whose remorseless witness stand confession to killing pregnant actress Sharon Tate in 1969 shocked the world, has died. She was 61 and had been suffering from brain cancer.

Atkins' death comes less than a month after a parole board turned down the terminally ill woman's last chance at freedom on Sept. 2. She was brought to the hearing on a gurney and slept through most of it.

California Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said that Atkins died late Thursday night. She had been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008, had a leg amputated and was given only a few months to live.
