Israel on Thursday announced the discovery of a 2,000-year-old pagan altar at the site where plans for a new hospital wing have come under fire from ultra-Orthodox Jews who fear bones found there may be of Jews.

It was discovered as the IAA was overseeing development of a hospital wing designed to withstand rockets fired from the nearby Gaza Strip by Palestinian militants.

Senator Nick Xenophon says organisations claiming to be religious thrive on their tax-free status.

He says legislation he introduced to the Senate last week would help flush out dangerous groups.

"If a cult cannot get tax-free status because of its activities then clearly that would make it more difficult for it to flourish and to expand," he said.

A new British inquest has been ordered into the death of a Jewish student in Germany after claims that he might have been killed by Lyndon LaRouche's far-Right cult.

A coroner in Germany ruled that Jeremiah Duggan, 22, had committed suicide by running on to a road where he was hit by fast-moving cars in 2003.

A High Court judge in London yesterday said that evidence of "foul play" must be investigated after new details suggested the crash was faked and he might have been killed.

A woman has told a media conference her granddaughters, aged eight and six, were promised in marriage to members of the Agape Ministries cult.

Meanwhile, Senator Nick Xenophon says he warned the South Australian Government about a suspicious doomsday cult in Adelaide and has called for the group's assets to be frozen.
