Warren Jeffs, the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a polygamy-sanctioning offshoot of Mormonism, is charged with two counts of sexual assault of a child.

The charges stem from an April 2008 raid on the church's Yearning for Zion compound outside the town of Eldorado, south of San Angelo, where Jeffs is set to be tried.

The mysterious disappearance of an Australian family linked to an internet cult has taken a dramatic twist, with police investigating whether they were on a plane which crashed in Brazil four years ago.

It is understood WA detectives have been investigating whether the group could have travelled under false identities, but are yet to find any evidence that they did.

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Sunday that communities should be able to prevent the construction of mosques in their neighborhoods.
